Ever wonder what goes into producing a podcast of your own? You’re in luck! On this episode of unsuitable on Rea Radio we’re offering you a glimpse behind the curtain.

To help tell the story behind unsuitable, we caught up with Brad Circone, former rock star turned branding guru and the producer of the award-winning podcast, and the show’s original host Mark Van Benschoten. The duo not only talks about the origins of the podcast, they offer listeners valuable tips, insight and best practices gathered from their own podcasting experience.

Mark explains the first obstacle to overcome was the need to sell the project internally. Fortunately, because of Rea’s existing company culture, and Mark’s passion for the project, this step wasn’t really too difficult. Once the podcast received the necessary buy-in, Brad, and the firm’s practice growth team was faced with implementation.

Your podcast should be a reflection of your organization’s brand. The name of your show, your content, your host … should reinforce the characteristics that make your business unique. For example, our goal was to spotlight the firm’s subject matter experts and thought leaders while highlighting our fun side. To this end, we spent a lot of time planning the show behind the scenes. In fact, the planning phase is ongoing.

To be successful, your team should also be on the same wavelength from a philosophical perspective. If you don’t jive behind the scenes you are really going to have a hard time conveying the mission of the show to your listeners.

Also, remember that gauging your success takes time. Don’t give up if you aren’t realizing earthshattering results after three weeks or so of producing your show. After all, there is already a lot of content on the airwaves at the moment, you need time to stand out and garner your following.

Listen to this episode of unsuitable on Rea Radio to discover three critical components of producing a podcast:

  • Getting it right behind the scenes – From your on-mic talent to the talent you tap to help out behind the scenes. Before you hit the record button, make sure you’ve taken the time to get it right where it counts, behind the scenes.
  • Consistency – Whether you are thinking about it or not, you are building a relationship with your audience. After all, that’s one of the greatest benefits of producing a podcast! Just be sure you aren’t letting them down and that you are there for them when they need you. Consistency counts.
  • Developing an ongoing marketing strategy – Starting a podcast is exciting and your marketing campaign will likely be epic … just don’t lose that momentum 55 episodes later. At Rea, we market our new episodes weekly AND we are always featuring past episodes for various reasons.
