The amount of data we produce continues to increase, which means the number of threats we receive from cybercriminals continues to increase as well. But just as the hackers are thinking of smarter ways to break into our networks, the good guys continue to think up new ways to protect our businesses. Ohio, for example, passed the Cybersecurity Data Breach safe harbor law in November.
Today’s guest, Mike Moran, president of Affiliated Resource Group, returns to the show to explain what that is and how it can actually help you protect your business.
What Does the Cybersecurity Data Breach Safe Harbor Law Mean for You?
Ohio has had a data protection law on the books since 2006 that requires notifying those affected by a data breach of personal information within 45 days of realization of the breach. In November 2018, the state passed and enacted a Cybersecurity Data Breach safe harbor law that provides a civil defense against liability for a firm that has had a data breach and has a written cybersecurity plan enacted for their organization.
So, if you’re wondering if your organization needs a cybersecurity plan, the answer is, unequivocally, yes! Not only is it a way to protect yourself from a potential headache and provide additional value to your clients, it’s how you can avoid being liable if you are the victim of an attack that compromises someone else’s data.
Many other states have similar laws, so do some research or check in with a cybersecurity expert to ensure that your organization is adequately prepared to protect personal data.
If you are responsible for storing any critical business data, or your client’s data, you will be interested in these other topics discussed in this episode:
- How “personal information” is legally defined.
- The five functions of a cybersecurity plan: Identify, protect, detect, respond, and recover.
- How a cybersecurity plan provides value to your organization.
