Ever since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act became the law of the land, it seems to be all anybody can talk about. That being said, we would be amiss not to touch on the importance of municipal taxes. After all, they can be just as complex as their federal counterparts.

Dan Bialek, a municipal tax ninja in our Northeast Ohio Region, joins unsuitable to talk about the Ohio Business Gateway (OBG), the elimination of the throwback rule, the 20-day rule, and more. The theme of the OBG is centralized collections; the complexity of multiple filing has been burdensome for taxpayers operating in multiple municipalities, and the goal is to allow taxpayers to file one return instead of many. That sounds great on the surface, but it’s causing a lot of controversies. On one hand, municipalities are concerned about how states are going to handle funds. And while this does reduce the number of filing, it does not necessarily reduce the complexity of navigating multiple municipalities.

If you are a taxpayer in Ohio, you will be interested in these other topics discussed in this episode:

  • What the elimination of the Throwback Rule means for business owners (and how you might be able to save some money).
  • How the 20-day rule affects employees working in multiple municipalities.
  • One thing Ohio employees can do right now that might reduce their tax burden.
