If you’re expecting a tax refund from the IRS or state department of taxation, you can check the status of your refund online or by phone. Here’s how.
Where’s My Refund is a secure online tool you can use to track your refund. Your refund information is generally available within 72 hours after the IRS acknowledges your e-filed return, or three to four weeks after your return has been mailed.
You’ll need to have your federal tax return handy to check the status of your refund. The site will ask for your Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number, your filing status (single, married filing jointly, married filing separate, head of household or qualifying qidow/er) and the exact whole dollar refund amount. The site will acknowledge that your return was received and is being processed and provide the mailing date or direct deposit date of your refund. You’ll also have the opportunity to correct your address online if the refund is unable to be delivered.
The site also provides steps to help you resolve any issues affecting your refund and is accessible to visually impaired taxpayers. Those who do not have Internet access can also call 800-829-1954. You’ll need to provide the same information as those who check their refund status online. For more information, visit www.irs.gov.
Many state departments of taxation have similar online services. In Ohio, you can track your tax refund by going to http://tax.ohio.gov/%20and clicking on the “Learn the status of your refund” link on the left side of the page. You’ll need to enter your Social Security number and date of birth to check the status of your refund. You can also call the Ohio Department of Taxation at 800-282-1780.
